Stand by Me

Last week on The Vampire Diaries, Stefan confronted his amnesia with the help of Elena and Damon.  Elena dredged up old feelings when she tried to jog Stefan’s memory, and Stefan wasn’t exactly pleased to find out she had left him for his older brother.  Meanwhile, in the final moments of the episode, Dr. Maxfield killed Jesse, turning him into a vampire.  Questions abounded.  Would Stefan stay in Mystic Falls? Was Tyler back for good? What are Dr. Maxfield’s motives?  Much was revealed in this week’s episode.

“Monster’s Ball” opened in Dr. Maxfield’s laboratory.  Whitmore College’s resident creepy mad scientist was working on his latest experiment–turning his best student into a vampire.  After performing a variety of tests on Jesse, who was chained to an operating table, Dr. Maxfield concluded that Jesse was a “perfect candidate” for vampire transformation.

Across campus, Elena wrote in her diary about returning to college with Caroline at Bonnie’s posthumous request.  She had resolved to distract herself from Bonnie’s death by finding out everything she could about the mysterious Dr. Maxfield.  Damon showed up to surprise Elena, and asked why she had been ignoring him, and she apologized before running off to class.

Meanwhile, Caroline and Tyler were back at it, making the most of their reunion. Assuming Tyler was back at school with her for good, Caroline had compelled him a single dorm room and registered him as a Sociology major.  She invited Tyler to the Whitmore Historical Ball, and arranged for them to dress up as Bonnie and Clyde.  Elena, Damon, and even Stefan would be attending the ball as well.
